Our modern lives are packed full of objects, ones we notice and ones we don't, all of them designed. From paperclips to hospital beds and dresses to dump-trucks. They're in every part of our lives - both the chair we're sitting on and the machines and tools that were used to make it. Some objects are purely functional while others are purely decorative.

We've always had a personal relationship to the things we use and gather around us. The fabric on our sofa, bikes we ride and books on our shelves all say something about us. It's important to think about why you want or like the things you do. Will they be around for a long time or a little, are they made in a way that harms the environment, what do they say about you?
